Transferring text messages from old iphone to new iphone

I will be upgrading my iPhone in the near future (currently have the 8). When I do, I want to transfer all of my old text messages to the new phone. I have iCloud, and backup regularly, but up to and including the present, I have not been backing up my messages. In researching, most of what I've seen said that if I turn backup messages on, it won't be retroactive, meaning it will only backup new messages going forward (and not fulfilling my purpose to keep all old messages once I get the new phone).

Bottom line, without an old backup on iCloud that included my messages, is there any way to transfer those old messages to the new phone? And if so, how?
