There appear to be several 2m Apple Thunderbolt 2 cables on EBay.

The cable on a Thunderbolt Display is permanently attached.

It is permanently attached – but I think the suggestion was to run a cable into the daisy-chaining port, and leave the permanently attached cable unused.

People sometimes do that as a way of bypassing a bad or flaky cable, but there's probably nothing keeping you from doing it to bypass a good one …

I don't know if there are such things as Thunderbolt 1/2 extension cables that would work here. Current versions of macOS do not like to see display errors, and will cut resolution or signal when they see them. The longer the cable, the greater the chance that RF interference or signal attenuation will cause errors.

Plus, at least originally, Thunderbolt 1/2 cables were higher grade cables than Mini DisplayPort cables. The latter might terminate in plugs and sockets with the same physical connector, but I'm pretty sure that when Thunderbolt first came out, you couldn't use any old Mini DisplayPort cable you had lying around to carry Thunderbolt data.
