[DANGEROUS BUG] Bluetooth volume goes up to 90%

This only started to happen in the last week or so

iphone 16 pro

ios 18.2.1

the bug: basically i am listening to something on my earbuds, then I stop it and lock my iphone. the next the i unlock the iphone the volume is visibly cranked up to about 90%, or just 1 level below max. this is a very dangerous bug because at this level the volume is too much to safely listen.

ps: i have attention aware turned off, turning it on doesn't change this. i also set 75 decibels as the maximum volume of the headphones due to becoming almost deaf a few times due to this bug, but even with this the bug is very noticable

iPhone 16 Pro, iOS 18

As you know, the bluetooth device is fully capable of changing the volume on your phone. While I agree Technics is a solid brand, it is going to be difficult to determine if it is a problem with the earbuds or iOS. If the same volume issue was reported with AirPods and other earbuds it would be a strong argument that it was iOS related, but that does not seem to be the case.

Getting support for the Technics earbuds is also difficult as you won't be able to take them to the Apple Store for diagnostics. That just leaves you with doing the diagnostics on your own by pairing them with another device/iOS version and if the results are the same, I think you can conclude that the earbuds are the problem. It may be possible to update the firmware on the Earbuds using the Technics Audio Connect app if there is one available.

hi mac, thanks for trying to reproduce the bug. i don't have airpods but another premium earbuds, this exact one:

i have been using these earbuds for several months with my iphone with no issues until more or less one week ago when this issue started, i'm not sure if it's due to a new ios version or not.

i should say that the issue is visibly the bluetooth volume of the iphone, after i unlock the iphone i can visibly see the volume bar go from 50% to 90% on its own

I did have a very similar issue with the ringer sound of the iphone before, where whether or not the iphone was connected to earbuds with bluetooth, the sound of the ringer (keyboard sound & the click when you lock the phone etc) would randomly increase which to a high volume (not 90%, but still much higher than normal) was very unpleasant, and the solution to this bug was to turn off attention aware, which fixes the issue.

btw i should mention that i do not have a case.

so, this is why i suspect the issue is with ios and not the earbuds, and i would hope that in the best case there could be a setting to fix this issue as well

btw, i remember a few days ago the same bug occurred when my iphone was connected to another device, a speaker that was connected with blutooth, this is another reason to suspect that the bug is caused by a recent update to the ios

hi lawrence,

noise-induced hearing loss can be caused both by one-time exposure to an intense sound

or by continuous exposure to loud sounds over an extended period of time

here is more info: https://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/noise-induced-hearing-loss

i was able to prevent this bug from causing much damage thanks to discovering being able to limit loud audios in the settings, but without that it is quite dangerous indeed.
