Brother Printer In Use when printing from Mac Book Air

My Brother Printer MFC-J5335DW which I've had for a few years won't print from my MacBook Air (M3 I think). This happened once before and I can't recall how I fixed it, possibly uninstalled printer and re-added.

The WiFi seems fine, printer appears in Printers in systems, have tried all the obvious things and cleared print queue etc.

Printer Software is up to date, and seems to be saying don't need to 'update software' on Mac if Airprinting, which is what I do. I have never hard-wired the printer (think I might have tried when first bought it, but always air printed from PC Originally and now Mac for past year (also from iPhone) without a problem.

Not sure why it say bonjour in Printer info .. but think that was there before anyway.

At one point in past I think the printer appeared in Printers list 2 or 3 times, but deleted surplus ones so don't think that's the problem any more.

Any ideas please?

Yes, the Brother MFC-J5335DW is listed as supported in About AirPrint - Apple Support (en-us edition, December 13, 2024). Provided that the printer and your Mac are connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router), it should be possible to print without additional software/drivers.

AirPrint works with wireless (Wi-Fi) or wired (Ethernet) network connections, so you could choose to wire the printer to one of the LAN ports of the router instead of using Wi-Fi. An Ethernet connection may be more stable.

Usually, a Mac discovers AirPrint network printers automatically (using Bonjour/mDNS). It can take some time.

It should also be possible to print from an iPhone or iPad without an additional app.

However, a full power-cycle sequence may be necessary (do not forget the Wi-Fi router):

  • Power off the Wi-Fi router, the printer, the Mac, all iPhones/iPads, and other devices/computers.
  • Wait two to three minutes.
  • Power on the router.
  • Wait two to three minutes.
  • Power on the printer.
  • Wait a minute or two.
  • Power on the Mac, all iPhones/iPads, and other devices/computers.

You may want to check that the printer has the latest firmware.
