USB audio out by iPhone 15 Pro

How does the audio output work via USB on the iPhone 15 Pro? Which signal is transmitted there? Digital? Or digital and analog? To ask the question differently: does an adapter USB-C to 3.5mm jack need a built-in DAC or not?

By the way, I ask myself the same question with the USB ports on the MacBook Pro (16", Nov. 2023, M3 Max, OS 14.7.2).

iPhone on iOS 26 no longer sends lossless audio via USB to external DAC. I use Apple Lossless audio on my iPhone and plug it via USB into my amp's DAC. it sounds great! When it works. Unfortunately it has completely stopped working in iOS 26. Other sources on earlier iOS still work. Is anyone else having a problem using an external DAC with iOS 26 devices? (I mean, I know you are, just kind of an edge case.) I believe some people have identified Automix as a problem, but I've turned that off and it still doesn't work.

Need iPad Pro USB-C to optical (Toslink) output adapter to DAC I'm looking to output my iPad Pro music and streaming audio to a Denon DA300 USB DAC. I had used the Denon previously with previous iPhones/iPads with a lightning to dual USB-B and lightning (charging) outputs. Would've liked to get something similar since the DAC output is connected with a good/audiophile USB cable. The DAC also has optical input though. Anybody have good luck with a USB-C to Toslink audio adapter, possibly (not mandatory) coupled with Lightning or USB-C output to charge?

The USB-C outputs a digital signal you’ll need a DAC of some sort to convert to analog. Some cables may include a DAC, so depending on the quality you require, may suffice for your needs.
