If you see the message below, or similar "inactive" messages:
- "Inactive" Apple ID/Account
- "Verification Failed. This Apple ID is not active."
If you see an alert with a Request Access button, you might be able to request access to your account by tapping Request Access. or by telephone at one of the numbers in this support article --> https://support.apple.com/HT201232
If you have not used the account in a long time, note:

You will need to either gain access to that account and reset the Password to remove it by following the steps in this Support Article:
If your Apple Account is locked, not active, or disabled - Apple Support
or, send in the original purchase receipt from Apple or Authorized Apple Seller to remove the Activation Lock placed on the device from that Apple ID:
And if you do manage to delete that Apple Account and if there are any paired devices including iPhone and iPad associated with that Apple Account, then Activation Lock on all of those will cause the devices to be bricked pending providing receipts or other evidence sufficient to convince Apple of your device ownership.
