There are always 4-5 emails at the top of my inbox that are labeled "Priority". Given that this is annoying and not fully effective, how do I stop (and keep stopped) Mail from compiling "Priority" emails at the top of my inbox view so I can decide for myself which emails are a "priority"?

Thank you. I was having the same problem and the show priority was 'greyed' out on my options as I was looking at 'all mailboxes'. You have to go into each mailbox (if you have multiple) and uncheck Show Priority. Thank you!
Yes - I had the same issue - but your response clarified this and I have now unchecked priority
The answer is there for people to see. Why do you care if people respond to it or not? I say don't clutter the discussion with thank yous (so I guess opinions differ on this issue).
You are in the wrong place. Click the View dropdown menu at the very top of the screen, three items to the right of Safari. Look for Show Priority about half way down and uncheck. Not the PriorityField further down.
