You need to use an 85W MagSafe 1 power adapter for a 17" MBPro 2010 laptop.

You can use a smaller power adapter to charge the battery if the laptop is off, but you won't be able to run the laptop with a smaller power adapter.

In order to avoid any misunderstanding, could you please clarify?

Do you mean the MagSafe plug that connects to the MacBook Pro or the AC power plug that connects to the wall socket?

If the latter, do you have a "duckhead" AC plug (country/area version) or are you possibly using an earthed/grounded power adapter extension cable?
