How to stop Siri reading out text messages in CarPlay

Recently, Siri has stopped announcing that I have received a text message (with the option “would I like to read it”) and now just reads out the whole text message! This is obviously not great if I have passengers. How do I get it to back to just announcing the messages?

Siri asking me which app to use to send a text message When I’m driving and ask Siri to send a text message, she asked me which app to use. This is new behavior. I am not aware that I have any other app to use that messages. This is making voice text messages while driving unusable.
