I’m travelling and I didn’t bring the MacBook wall wart with me.. Is it necessary to charge my MacBook with the big wall wart?
can’t I use the one used for my phone? Or will it harm the battery?

You can use the one for your phone, but it will charge the MBP very slowly.
It has a very low power output vs. your laptop's ac power adapter.
No, it won't harm the laptop battery.
The output of an iPhone power adapter is MAYBE one tenth what you need to charge and run your Mac.
D.I Johnson was being exceptionally generous when he said it would work slowly.
You will want to Shutdown your Mac after connecting to power, and allow to charge all night. it will still not make a LOT of progress. But better than nothing.
