Chrome installation failure on MacBook Pro M4 Max

Downloaded official Chrome to a brand new MacBook. Installed Chrome successfully to Application. From Application, clicked Chrome and Chrome icon displayed on the Dock. However, it just stayed there (no bouncing), and the browser did not load or open. Uninstalled and reinstalled with fresh downloads for multiple time to no avail. Brand new MacBook Pro M4 Max without any other application installed. Safari and all other Office 365 apps work fine.

As Leroy suggests, definitely try other browsers. There could be some odd internet connection issue (due to something else installed, except you said nothing else is installed) or possibly something caused by your router.

Have you booted into Safe Mode? Apple has instruction for that, the procedure is different for different models. Boot into Safe Mode, then reboot normally and try to install Chrome and run it. If that fails:

  • Boot into Safe Mode and try to install and run Chrome while in Safe Mode. Does that work?
  • While booted normally, create a new user and then log out of your regular user and log in to the new user and try Chrome again.

Finally ...

  • Boot into Recovery and then run Disk First Aid, repeat until no errors are reported, then boot normally and try again. (I think this is a low likelihood of helping but it is worth a try.)

The above suggestions are all low-tech, standard troubleshooting steps.

Do you see Chrome in the menubar when you try to click it open....or HUD (heads up display) Command Tab (?)

If active and launched—Is it a matter of opening a new window for the browser, typically ...Command N

Otherwise it sounds like a Chrome installer issue. Try a different third party browser and compare your results.

Chrome support was already mentioned above.

Good lord— I would not "erasing all contents and resetting the laptop per Apple instructions to its factory configuration" for an app that is not installing..

The application has to be launched if you expect the Command N to open a new Chrome window.

It is painless to try an alternative browser and compare your results...why would you not(?)

if the Chrome installer sitting on the server is corrupt it may never install until google chrome fixes the issue.

I usually have this happen on my M1 when trying to install the latest up date and usually follow Googles suggestion to uninstall it.

  1. At the bottom of your computer screen, in your Dock, right-click Chrome.
  2. Select Quit.
  3. Open Finder.
  4. Go to the folder containing the Google Chrome application on your computer.
    • Tip: It may be in your Applications folder. If not, go to File  Find, and search for "Google Chrome."
  1. Drag Google Chrome to the Trash.
  2. Optional: Delete your profile information, like bookmarks and history:
    1. At the top of the screen, click Go  Go to Folder.
    2. Enter ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome.
    3. Click Go.
    4. Select all the folders, and drag them to the Trash.

Hi Leroy Douglas and everyone who helped and responded to my earlier posts,

I’ve decided to start fresh by using the Apple "Erase Assistance" option to restore my M4 Max to factory settings. Since this is a new device I just got last week, I thought I shouldn’t have experienced any issues with the Chrome app not launching after multiple un-installations and re-installations of the app sucessfully.

The erase assistance process was straightforward, and I’ve since re-downloaded and installed Chrome, which is now working flawlessly as expected. I am not sure if my earlier problem has anything to do with my Office 365 install, and that's why I choose to download and install Chrome first right after the factory reset.

Thank you all again for your help and support. Wishing you a fantastic 2025!

hmmm...

365 is an application installed....(?)

—Remove the old Dock icon if it is not working.

— verify the Chrome app landed in your Applications folder, if not drag it to the Applications folder...?

—Try launching the app from the Applications folder

Hi Leroy Douglas,

Thank you for getting back to me regarding the Chrome issue.

My bad as I was not clear - I don't have any other apps installed in the new M4 Max except Office 365. Both Safari and the Office apps are functioning as expected.

I've re-tried several troubleshooting steps as you suggested: I removed the Chrome icon from the Dock, uninstalled Chrome, and then reinstalled a fresh copy from the official Office website. I also confirmed that the Chrome app was correctly installed in my Applications folder and attempted to launch it directly from there, but without success. That is, Chrome never opened on my desktop.

When I click on Google Chrome in the Applications folder, the Chrome icon would appear in the Dock, bouncing once or twice before stopping. However, no browser window opens, and the icon just stays there. Even if I right-click the icon in the Dock and select "Open," nothing happens.

I am going to try what AI Weir have suggested but if all fails afterwards, I am inclined to reset it back to factory configuration and re-do everything. It's really strange that Chrome appears to be installed properly but not able to open or launch. I also tried to disable iCloud - Private Relay to no avail.

Hi AI Weir,

Thank you for your response regarding the Chrome issue.

I wanted to clarify that there is no "Quit" option for Chrome in the Dock because the application has never been able to launch or open successfully. However, the Chrome app is correctly installed in the Applications folder. I have tried to remove the Chrome icon from the Dock, uninstall and re-install Chrome dmg file multiple times without able to launch open the app. Despite multiple attempts to launch it directly from the Application folder, nothing happens - except creating the Chrome icon in the Dock.

Additionally, there are no Google or Chrome folders in the Library/Application Support folder, as the browser has never successfully launched.

At this point, I am considering erasing all contents and resetting the laptop per Apple instructions to its factory configuration as a potential solution for setting up the MacBook all over again.
