Where has the CAMERA ROLL gone?

Why have Apple removed the camera roll? Now I can’t find all the pictures that I HAVEN’T moved off into libraries PLUS all the pictures I deliberately DON’T want to move off. The camera roll is of paramount importance!! What is wrong with people!! Why do they keep wanting to change things just for the sake of it. This is a tidied up repost of a previous version they removed because I was a little less generous.

There is no "solution" just using or re-arranging the standard views in Photos. The key utility and function of the Camera Roll / Recents folder which was in Photos prior to 18 is gone. People who post solutions are trying to help but it seems that many of them don't understand and/or didn't use the unique features of Camera Roll / Recents and so, although their solution might work for them, it won't work for you. Whatever the case, there's no point getting mad at them.

You can send Apple feedback - if they get enough then they might put the functionality back.

If you just want to separate images taken with different cameras then, since the camera type is part of the photos' metadata, you might be able to use smart folders in Photos to only display images taken with a particular camera. There are posts on that recently on these boards.

There have been a lot of posts about this since the functionality was removed and in some of them there are recommendations for image management apps which might give you this capability back, so I suggest you search the forum for posts about Photos and see if you can find an app that does what you want. I have never used any, so can't help further.

That was years ago.

What happened to the Camera Roll album on my iOS device?

After you turn on iCloud Photos, the Camera Roll album is replaced with an All Photos album. The All Photos album gives you the same compact scroll view, now with all your photos and videos organized by the date you add them.

That feature is absolutely useless. The thumbnails are so tiny that you can’t see anything, you can’t view as a gallery. What is wrong with people? Do you think that just because you don’t use the camera roll that no one else does? There is a good reason that I use the camera roll and mixing them in with my entire library is utterly bonkers and utterly useless to me. Seriously Apple- what possessed you?

I know you aren’t Apple linmos, but you seem to think that Apple has done nothing different. They have, and the thousands of posts about it bear that out.

camera roll may have been renamed recents a while back but it was always just the ‘camera roll’ (ie photos you’d taken but not synced off into libraries yet). Now, all my camera roll pictures are mixed in with the ‘library’ (and why would anyone want to see ALL their pictures in that way is beyond me when you have 20000 odd photos - but hey ho, fine, but let me also see just the photos I’ve taken).

I can access the camera roll, as someone said, via the camera app, however it is so clunky, long winded and not user friendly that it’s actually completely useless.

there are plenty of people trotting out the same useless solutions over and over so clearly they don’t understand the posts that people are placing in the first place.
