Sorry, no way to erase the XR unless it is working.

As long as you had a passcode for the phone, there is no way that anyone could ever access the data on the phone......even if they take it apart and try to rebuild it using other spare parts.

No and the chances of Apple giving you any trade value for a phone which isn't operational isn't very high. One of the things you have to say when you trade in a phone is whether it works. You can't say it does. So Apple won't likely give you anything for it.

I'd go to your closest Apple Store and see if they will, but don't be surprised if they won't.

Was your phone passcode-locked when it worked? It sounds like the chances of the phone working again are slim, but if it did suddenly work again at a recycling facility, a passcode would presumably help to protect your data.
