About availability of TikTok and ByteDance Ltd. apps in the United States

TikTok and ByteDance Ltd. apps are no longer available in the United States, and visitors to the United States may have limited access to features.

Apple is obliged to follow the laws in the jurisdictions where it operates. Pursuant to the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, apps developed by ByteDance Ltd. and its subsidiaries — including TikTok, CapCut, Lemon8, and others — will no longer be available for download or updates on the App Store for users in the United States starting January 19, 2025.

The following are some of the apps developed by ByteDance Ltd. and its subsidiaries that are affected:

TikTok

TikTok Studio

TikTok Shop Seller Center

CapCut

Lemon 8

Hypic

Lark - Team Collaboration

Lark - Rooms Display

Lark Rooms Controller

Gauth: AI Study Companion

MARVEL SNAP

If you live in the United States

If you already have these apps installed on your device, they will remain on your device. But they can't be redownloaded if deleted or restored if you move to a new device. In-App-Käufe und neue Abonnements sind nicht mehr möglich.

Users in the United States won't receive updates for these apps, which could potentially impact performance, security, and compatibility with future versions of iOS and iPadOS, and some app functions might become limited or stop working since the app can't receive updates.

If you're visiting the United States

ByteDance's apps remain available for download in all other countries and regions where they are available.

Users visiting from outside the United States with their Apple Account set to a country or region that is not the United States are unable to download, update or make in-app purchases and new subscriptions inside ByteDance Ltd. apps while within the land or maritime borders of the United States.

After leaving the United States, you'll have access to all functionality.

Just because the app isn't banned doesn’t mean it’s available. If you follow the news and read how the ban applies to app stores, particularly Apple’s response, you’d know that it’s far more complex than a knee-jerk reaction of running to the App Store.

Be patient. Apple didn’t become the most vigilant proponent and leader of security by making irrational decisions at the cost of its consumers. Their being proactive and treading carefully through these murky political waters speaks volumes to their priorities, not just to the company, but also to us.

Apple needs to put TikTok back in the App Store because it is not banned in the USA!!!

You obviously have not read any of the information provided, which would explain how you came to the conclusion that it is not banned. You are free to use the web version for now, although the days for that have been numbered unless China decides to divest TikTok to a US company. The law that put fines on both Google and Apple for allowing it in the App Store has NOT been repealed. In addition, the Supreme Court has NOT even ruled whether the fines imposed by the law could be removed.

With that you are left with the web version, so if you want to call that unbanned, then that is fine, but that is the only way you will be able to access it and you can use Safari to do that.

I never deleted my TikTok and was on it early today but for some reason it suddenly offloaded. Now I can’t redownload it. I’m so annoyed. If it’s not banned at the moment, we should be able to download it.

You would be wrong. Congress has not eliminated the fines placed on both Google and Apple for allowing anyone to download TikTok. The only thing left for you to do is access it on the web using Safari.

It also sounds like you have Optimized Storage turned on. This is a feature that is turned off by default, so you must have turned it on yourself. This will offload apps when your storage space becomes constrained. Your phone is doing exactly what you told it to do.

The next day I woke up and everybody had said TikTok is back on the phone and I said oh my God I have deleted TikTok. I want TikTok back on my phone because it’s so hard to download it and I don’t even know my password no more to change my country so what do I need to do?

In the meantime, what you can do is read my User Tip which fully explains the TikTok ban situation to familiarize yourself with it: Understanding the TikTok Ban and Why You Cannot Download It

it won’t let me get back on the Apple store with TikTok

No, it will not let you get it back. If you have not heard, Congress passed a law that placed fines on both Google and Apple for allowing anyone to download or redownload the app in their App Stores. The Supreme Court upheld the law. All you can do is access TikTok on the web using Safari, at least for now. If you have anymore questions about the law, contact your Congressional Representatives who voted to pass the law.
