About availability of TikTok and ByteDance Ltd. apps in the United States

TikTok and ByteDance Ltd. apps are no longer available in the United States, and visitors to the United States may have limited access to features.

Apple is obliged to follow the laws in the jurisdictions where it operates. Pursuant to the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, apps developed by ByteDance Ltd. and its subsidiaries — including TikTok, CapCut, Lemon8, and others — will no longer be available for download or updates on the App Store for users in the United States starting January 19, 2025.

The following are some of the apps developed by ByteDance Ltd. and its subsidiaries that are affected:

TikTok

TikTok Studio

TikTok Shop Seller Center

CapCut

Lemon 8

Hypic

Lark - Team Collaboration

Lark - Rooms Display

Lark Rooms Controller

Gauth: AI Study Companion

MARVEL SNAP

If you live in the United States

If you already have these apps installed on your device, they will remain on your device. But they can't be redownloaded if deleted or restored if you move to a new device. In-App-Käufe und neue Abonnements sind nicht mehr möglich.

Users in the United States won't receive updates for these apps, which could potentially impact performance, security, and compatibility with future versions of iOS and iPadOS, and some app functions might become limited or stop working since the app can't receive updates.

If you're visiting the United States

ByteDance's apps remain available for download in all other countries and regions where they are available.

Users visiting from outside the United States with their Apple Account set to a country or region that is not the United States are unable to download, update or make in-app purchases and new subscriptions inside ByteDance Ltd. apps while within the land or maritime borders of the United States.

After leaving the United States, you'll have access to all functionality.

If you already have a subscription to TikTok, CapCut, or another ByteDance Ltd. app, you can still cancel your subscription.

TikTok is currently blocked in the US due by law:

About availability of TikTok and ByteDance Ltd. apps in the United States - Apple Support

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/17/technology/tiktok-ban-sale-supreme-court.html

It has NOT been unbanned -- yet:

https://www.nytimes.com/article/what-we-know-tiktok.html

It may take you more time than a TikTok video to actually read those articles, but you have time for that now that TikTok is unavailable so please take more than a few seconds to fully understand the issue.

Per the NYT article, "the law penalizes app stores, like Apple and Google, and other internet companies, like Oracle, for distributing or updating any TikTok content". Therefore, TikTok is currently unavailable on the Apple app store and Google app store. Apple, nor anyone on this community change that. The US Supreme Court recently upheld the ban and therefore only the US Congress can change the law at this point.

While you are at it, this may be a worthy read:

Please read the many, many other posts about this topic. But if you need a starting point:

The TikTok app is currently unavailable in the app store due to US law:

Despite the app currently functioning, it has NOT been unbanned:

https://www.nytimes.com/article/what-we-know-tiktok.html

The US Supreme Court recently upheld the ban and therefore only the US Congress can change the law at this point. It is only speculation that an incoming administration may be able to intervene unless ByteDance meets the requirements of the law as passed.

I don’t even know Apple can’t bring it back because the ban has already been lifted has it not? It’s actually annoying now for the people who deleted it by accident.

You seem to get your information from a very poor source and may want to reconsider the accuracy of it. Here are some facts for you.

  • The fines placed on both Apple and Google for allowing any downloads have NOT been repealed by Congress.
  • The Supreme Court has NOT ruled whether an Executive Order could even lift those fines.
  • It is NOT available in the Google Play store either.
  • That leaves you with accessing TikTok with a previously downloaded app or on the web for now. Apparently that is what you mean by the ban being lifted. You currently have about 61 days left for ByteDance to divest to a US company before that gets shut down as well.
  • Currently ByteDance has not divested to a US company and there is no guarantee that they will.
  • As it stands now, Apple and Google must pay $5,000 for each user that they let download/redownload TikTok. They also cannot update the app and any subscription will not renew.

Hopefully the helps your understanding. Feel free to contact your Congressional Representatives that passed the law for any more information. It is their job to represent you, so you should be familiar with who they are and how they voted.

Hello~ Please take a moment to read this thread. You will need to wait. Apple’s stance…

The TikTok app is not currently available in the App Store and we can’t speculate on the return. You are speaking to other forum members and we can’t rectify this situation.

Why is Apple denying the use or download of Tictok

Apple is not denying the use of TikTok and any previous download will still work and you can access it on the web using Safari. You cannot download TikTok from either the App Store or the Google Play store as the law imposing fines on both companies has NOT been overturned. The Executive Order extended the time to sell TikTok, but that still must happen under the current law. There has not been a legal ruling saying the Apple or Google would no longer be fined for allowing downloads.

I deleted TikTok once I heard that it would be banned because I thought it would be it then it was announced that TikTok had been UN-banned so I went to the App Store and I couldn’t find the app to put TikTok back in the App Store for the people who deleted it since it is now unbanned

Hello~ Ya’ll?? We are only fellow forum members like yourself. Please see this link for Apple’s current stance…

Speculation is not supported here in these forums. We have no idea when or whether it it will be returned to the App Store. Patience will be required and we are not Apple but fellow forum members like yourself. Apple is obeying the law right now and this situation is totally out of their hands. This is a complicated issue and again your patience is required. You can still participate online. You can let Apple know your thoughts as they will not see them here in these forums by clicking on below…

YESSS🙌🏼🙌🏼 like it’s unbanned now , it needs to be back in app stores , SINCE IT IS UNBANNED . Apple do your job pleaseeeeee!!! (Not in a rude way)

Actually it is NOT. Congress has not repealed the fines that are imposted on Apple and Google for downloads in the App Store and the Supreme Court has NOT ruled that the fines imposed by the law can be eliminated with an Executive Order.

So, what does that leave you with? You can still use any previous download of TikTok and you can access it with Safari on the website. If I were you, I would not wait to use the web version because the days are numbered for access to that if China does not divest TikTok and sold to a US company. I guess that is what you mean by UNBANNED.
