Hi, I bought a used iPad from Steve & Kate's summer camp, didn't use it for a while and am now locked out. Don't have the original email of the initial user so can't get it unlocked. Camp couldn't/wouldn't help me with anything so it is now useless to me. What can I do with the iPad to keep my information secure? Take it to the Apple Store? Drive over it several times with a heavy truck? Thanks.
Unless you can successfully restart the iPad to a "running" state - and successfully enter the correct Passcode (that, of course, is known only to you) - you’ll not be able to erase the device.
This is perhaps not as critical as may first appear, as all locally stored data is encrypted - successful entry of the Passcode being the key to accessing any locally stored data. If you can’t access the data, then neither can anyone else.
You best option might be to return the iPad to the Genius Bar at an official Apple Store, who will happily arrange for the iPad to be responsibly recycled at no cost to you.

Thank you for your reply, Carol, and the link! I've been through all the stuff in the link with Apple support and I don't remember how/why we were able to use it before. I'd just want to know whether there's a good way to dispose of it? Maybe I should just contact support again?
