Ask the repair provider what parts they used for your repair, if those details are not included on a repair invoice.

Apple authorized repair providers will use Apple parts.

Technicians that use the self-service Apple repair program can also use Apple parts, though that program doesn't cover as far back as iPhone 13.

What parts are used by other repair providers varies. Widely.

While there are a few parts that can show user-visible errors (e.g. display, battery), nobody other than the repair provider knows what happened with this iPhone and this repair.

If you had the phone repaired by a shop that was not authorized by Apple, and parts were required during the service, non-genuine parts were likely installed because a non-authorized shop would not have access to genuine Apple parts.

But, the Model Number would normally not be affected by this.

If you are not sure if you used an authorized Apple shop for repairs, use the link below to see if you can find the name and location of the shop that did the repairs. If you can't.....then you used a non-authorized shop.

Find Locations

If you now take the phone to an authorized Apple shop.....and they detect tampering or that a non-genuine part was used.....the shop will refuse to perform service on the phone.

In addition, the phone will have zero value on an Apple trade in program.

What was the model number before the repair? Normally a repair does not change the model number, unless it was done as an exchange from Apple. “M” as the first character means the iPhone was purchased retail.

The first letter in the model number represents the source of the device. Currently, there are five known possible choices:

  • "F": refurbished unit
  • "M": retail unit
  • "N": replacement unit
  • "P": personalized (engraved) unit
  • 3 or 5: Refurbished by an Apple authorized refurbisher
