That suggests you have the input language layout set to a QUERTZ layout.
Go to System Settings ➜ Keyboard ➜ Input Sources [Edit], and make sure your Language and layout are correct.

1) Test a different keyboard with the iMac.
Most any after-market USB keyboard will work on a USB-C to USB-a adapter.
2) Connect that keyboard to another Mac.
One at a family members or friends house will do.
Take the keyboard to the local AASP or Apple Store for testing.
Looks like an 3rd party App issue. What App are you using? Does it happen on Notes?

Does the input menu in the top right of your screen actually say US? And all the other keys produce what is printed on them?
