Macbook pro optical disc drive

Did you search OWC/Macsales for some firmware update or compatibility for your third party

If I'm not mistaken, some of the OWC optical drives ship with a 'Y' cable – a dual 'USB-A' to 'Micro-B' type cable – that is intended to be used when the optical drive itself might require extra juice. I'd be surprised if your repurposed MBP drive requires it, but it's worth trying if you still have that cable.
