What MacBook to upgrade from 2020 macbook air for primarily video watching

I have a 2020 MacBook Air:

  • i5 1.1 GHz processor
  • 8GB Memory

It works fine in every other aspect, but I primarily use it for watching videos that are stream-based (YouTube, Twitch) and it overheats very often, so loud that I have to turn up the volume to hear over the fan. There’s no keyboard cover or anything else on it to prevent the laptop from self-venting. I also have a MacBook Pro that I use at work and it’s never once overheated. The Air will overheat even when attending meetings on Teams or Zoom.

What build of MacBook Air should I get, and what additional components (if any) should I add to it when I plan to trade in the Air in the spring? I have pretty much zero knowledge on what part of the laptop does what for me, so don’t know if I need to add memory or a different processor or what to prevent it from overheating instantly.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations/suggestions.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 15.2

If you are mostly using the laptop for watching videos, meetings, and web browsing, then any currently sold model of MacBook Air will far exceed your needs. The 13-inch (M3 chip) base model should be great for you. You should however check how much storage you are currently using (See used and available storage space on your Mac - Apple Support) on your current MacBook Air and just make sure that your new one has plenty of additional storage (SSD size).

Although replacing your current MBA with a newer one makes a lot of sense, how you are using it may still be an issue going forward.

... so, that leaves you with a few choices to make (in order from most expensive to cheapest):

  • Get a Mac laptop that has built-in fans, like the MacBook Pro models.
  • Get a new MBA (they now include a built-in fan,) but also purchase a laptop cooling pad. The latter is a tray-like device, that you place your laptop on that has built-in fans and gets it power from your laptop itself.
  • Just deal with your current MBA ... but still consider getting the laptop cooling tray.
