Today's view widget problems iOS 18.2 on iPad

I have a shortcuts widget that I use to change focus modes on my iPad. I placed it on the "Today's View" screen so I can easily access it from any focus mode. But it regularly stops working, can't move it, can't press any of the access, can't change it or remove it.

To be clear this is not a problem with just that widget, the whole today's view bar acts weird, can't move any of the widgets or remove them (weather, calendar, etc) although those seem to work if I click them (they open the weather app, calendar, etc).

To top it up, the shortcuts widget works if I access the Today's view from the lock screen (although I can't move or remove widgets there either) but it doesn't if I do from the Home screen.

The "solution" is restart the iPad but that's not a solution since it happens multiple times a day at random. The workaround is having the widget on each of the focus modes home screens but Today's view should simply work, mostly because we're talking a widget for an apple's official app.....

If your iPad is not operating as expected, begin with a forced-restart of your iPad - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to assist with troubleshooting:

Apps should be easy to move within the Today View...

With the Today View exposed, touch-and-hold any empty area of the iPad screen to the right of the Today View; this will enable the editing mode - and all of the widget will "wobble".

While the widgets are wobbling, they can be dragged to the preferred location. New Widgets can be added using the "+" button.

When you have finished repositioning or adding Widgets to the view, simply tap an empty area of the screen - or tap the Done button at the top-right corner of the screen to finish.
