iPhone storage stays full after deleting lots of data

Starting about 4-6 weeks ago my IPhone 8 Plus began the behavior of allowing me to use less and less of the 128 Gb storage space. It reached max. capacity and required me to delete files to free up space. I did so. I deleted a couple videos I recorded that were a ridiculous 3+ gb in size though they were not even 15 minutes in duration and 720p @ 30hz. So I had 7 or 8 gb of space free and the next day it says that I am out of storage space again and so I can’t even take a picture without deleting more files. I deleted another 2gb video and I noticed that it only freed up 300mb of space. So I stopped deleting any more of my videos or photos because now I don’t have a handful of videos and photos on my phone anymore but I still can’t use the camera or install new apps. I also can’t use many of my apps because they have been removed automatically to the cloud due to lack of storage

space. Help would be appreciated because this is annoying. And one last thing, I can’t move any videos to my laptop unless they are very short and small in size because it will fail the transfer and say that the phone became unresponsive. If I use EaseUS Mobimover I can move photos and videos but only on my newer laptop. My previous laptop doesn’t detect my iPhone anymore even in Mobimover which had been able to before about 6 months ago.

When you delete photos and videos, you do not get the storage space back right away.

The photos and videos go to the Recently Deleted album to give you a chance to change your mind if you realize that you deleted some of them in error. You only get the space back when you

  • Let the deleted photos and videos remain in that album for 30 days, or
  • Go into that album and delete them from there

In that case, the photos and videos become permanently deleted, and there is no getting them back.

Note that if you have enough iCloud space, you may want to enable "Optimize iPhone Storage".

This gives the phone permission to substitute lower-quality, space-saving, local copies of photos and videos for full-quality, full-size versions. The full-quality versions remain in iCloud and the idea is that the phone can pull down individual full-size versions on demand.

With this system, the decision as to when to store space-saving versions on your phone, and when to store full-size versions on your phone, is up to the phone. It is not for storing photos in iCloud while removing them entirely from your phone – and if you delete a photo from your phone, it will be deleted from your phone and all of the places that are synchronized to it, including iCloud.
