iMessage, Instagram, Lapse, and other third-party apps do not share a unified contact photo system. Each app maintains its contact images separately, meaning that updates to a contact photo in one app do not automatically reflect in another.
Why This Happens:
- App-Specific Contact Photos – iMessage uses iCloud and your local Contacts app for profile pictures, while apps like Instagram or Lapse have their profile picture systems.
- No Shared Service – Unlike Meta services (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), which can sync profile pictures across platforms, Apple does not extend this to third-party apps.
- Permissions & Privacy – Apple restricts third-party apps from automatically accessing or updating contact photos from your iCloud or local Contacts app unless explicitly allowed.
If you want consistency, you must manually update the contact photos in each app. Some apps (like WhatsApp) allow you to set a contact's profile picture from your saved contacts, but others rely entirely on user-uploaded images.
