WhatsApp Desktop Unexpected Error on Mac upon logging with iPhone 16 Pro

All of the sudden my Whatsapp Desktop app stopped working, tried all the tricks in the book, from basic to expert... nothing worked. Until I tried my good old iPhone 11 (I have a 16 pro now - several months, but yesterday it all went to ****), and yes... I could reinstall the app. But when I went back and logged in to WhatsApp again on my 16 Pro, I got the message on my Mac: Unexpected error, you need to login again and restart. And we all know what that is leading nowhere.

So it is definitely iPhone & IOS related... any wizards here that are able to crack the enigma?

I assume it is settings related?

I really need this desktop app to work again to make my job smoother.

WA updates from version 24.25.94 to version 25.1.83 crashes. I recovered a copy of version 24.25.94 from Time Machine, replaced the 25.1.83 version and everything works. I have blocked future updates. (macOS Monterey)

If the WhatsApp desktop app on your Mac is crashing with the message "An Unexpected Error," it is unlikely to be related to your Mac or iPhone settings. The issue could be due to a bug in the app, a corrupted installation, or compatibility problems with your macOS version.

To resolve this, try the following steps:

  1. Restart Your Mac – A simple restart can sometimes fix temporary glitches.
  2. Check for Updates – Ensure you have the latest version of WhatsApp installed from the Mac App Store or WhatsApp's official website.
  3. Reinstall the App – Uninstall WhatsApp and download a fresh copy to eliminate potential corruption.
  4. Check macOS Compatibility – Make sure your macOS is updated and compatible with the latest version of WhatsApp.
  5. Try WhatsApp Web – If the desktop app continues to crash, use WhatsApp Web as an alternative.
  6. Contact WhatsApp Support – If the problem persists after troubleshooting, reach out to WhatsApp’s support team through their official website for further assistance.
    1. WhatsApp is not an Apple product. Contact the app developer here --> App Support or WhatsApp FAQ  Or Restoring your chat history - WhatsApp FAQ or Contact WhatsApp
    2. WhatsApp Business is not an Apple product. Contact the app developer here --> Developer Website  or App Support  or WhatsApp business products - WhatsApp FAQ

This issue is not related to your Mac or iPhone settings, so contacting WhatsApp support is the best course of action.

The issue lies with the iOS WhatsApp app, not WhatsApp Desktop. After months of troubleshooting and isolating potential causes, I discovered that the problem stems from a specific chat. This issue primarily affects users with older chats who have migrated from one iPhone to another or switched from Android to iPhone.

So yes, the fault is definitely with iOS WhatsApp. And no, WhatsApp support won't be of any help—they don't even bother to respond. Save yourself the trouble of giving a generic, points-chasing response.
