Switching Family Organizer without compromising shared iCloud storage

I would like to switch the family organizer to another family member. I read that this can only be done by disbanding the family and setting it up again with the new family organizer however I am worried about the family losing their current data linked to the shared iCloud Storage. Does anyone on the community know how I can approach this and keep the storage intact?

Each family member's iCloud storage data should remain connected to their account if they leave their current family, provided they are storing less than 5Gb, or are paying enough for their own data plan. See iCloud+ plans and pricing - Apple Support. There are also implications if you have a shared photo album or calendar for example. See the What happens when you stop sharing? section of Leave Family Sharing - Apple Support.

One detail that doesn't seem to be mentioned elsewhere is that you can only switch families once per year. I read a thread recently where someone trying to do something similar ended up locking themselves out of Family Sharing altogether.

Thank you for the info tt2, much appreciated.

The family storage plan is for 200GB and family members only have the 5GB free option and most of them are using >5GB, looks like they will need to switch on a plan just for the move... I'll will take a look at the links you shared and then decide if switch family organizers are worth the hassle and extra costs... 🤔
