screen sharing from MacBook Pro M4 to iMac 27inch Retina display 5k monitor

Hi I am somewhat confused I connected my MacBook Pro M4 to my iMac 27inch 5k monitor and my MacBook could see my iMac in the display setting the MacBook Pro recognised the iMac now when I plug it in via the thunderbolt lead it does not see it Why also just to muddy the waters when connected as above the iMac sees my MacBook Pro I am trying to use the 27 inch monitor as extra screen space for the MacBook does anyone have an answer why it does not function

The feature of using certain iMacs as a full-motion Video display was deprecated several years ago.


  • The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed.


Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support

Hi Grant

Thank you for replying ,What urks about this is that when I First connected my MacBook pro m4 2024 model to the iMac 5k 2017 model via a thunderbolt connection . My MacBook could see my iMac and I could drag objects across from one screen to the other which was encouraging , I shut both systems down for the night when i tried to connect the next day my MacBook refused to see the iMac Why and yet the iMac still sees the MacBook Pro now I am an inquisitive person is there something wrong with my MacBook ? I don't Know one minute it works then stops
