this has been an ongoing issue and it beggars belief that they would design a feature that just continually stops working with no setting. There MUST be a setting somewhere to stop it disconnecting?

Hotspot will disconnect if there is no activity for a few minutes to preserve battery energy, as Hotspot uses huge amounts of power. If the device that is using the hotspot has the same Apple ID as the iPhone it will reconnect automatically.
This will sound like blame shifting … but it’s not.
WiFi Hotspot is a feature provisioned by your carrier. How it behaves they determine. What actual “settings and controls” they might have to “adjust” service are unfortunately unknown to me.
I’ve used Hotspot for years w/ my own carrier — across several generations of iPhones — w/o significant issues.
That said, my hotspot usage does tend toward short-duration w/ fairly “active” communications.
How do I stop iPhone Hotspot from continuosly disconnecting?
