Airplane mode on iPhone 15 keeps switching off

I travel a lot and have had multiple iPhones, never experienced this before current trip.

iPhone 15 / iOS 17.4.1

This is what happens: get on flight, use corner shortcut to click on airplane mode button / button turns orange. Then within a minute I get the green notification that I have voicemail (I never listen to my VM), and within seconds the airplane icon top right is replaced by 5G or whatever. This on repeat, just cycles round. I’ve tried going into settings and clicking airplane mode there, same thing. I’ve hard turned off, thought I’d fixed it but it came back.

I’m wondering if it’s like sometimes on my Mac it won’t shut down because something is trying to complete an action. Could it be some buggy app? How would I identify it? It’s really annoying as I like to use my phone inflight (music, games, downloaded content), but had to keep turning it off so in the end I just hard turned off until we landed. I’ve had this phone for a year and done multiple flights with no issues. Any ideas?

If your iPhone 15's Airplane Mode keeps switching off automatically, it could be due to a few reasons: a faulty hardware switch, a buggy app, a problem with your carrier settings, or a software glitch in iOS; try restarting your phone, checking for updates, resetting network settings, or contacting Apple support for further assistance.

Potential causes and solutions:

  • Software issues:
    • Check for updates: Ensure your iPhone is running the latest iOS version.
    • Restart your phone: A simple restart can often resolve temporary glitches.
    • Force restart: If a normal restart doesn't work, try a forced restart.
    • Reset network settings: Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
  • Hardware issues:
    • Physical damage: Check for any visible damage to the physical Airplane Mode switch on your phone.
    • Clean the switch: Gently clean the switch area with a soft cloth to remove debris.
  • App interference:
    • Check for problematic apps: Some apps might interfere with your phone's connectivity settings.
    • Try disabling apps one by one: To identify the culprit, temporarily disable apps and see if the issue persists.
  • Carrier settings:
    • Check for carrier updates: Go to Settings > General > About to see if a carrier settings update is available.
    • Contact your carrier: Reach out to your mobile carrier if you suspect issues with your network settings.

What to do if the problem persists:

  • Contact Apple Support: If none of the above solutions work, contact Apple Support for further troubleshooting or potential hardware repair options.
