Do AirTags provide an exact location or just a radius?

do they give a radius or approximate location of the item??

Its important to understand that an AirTag does NOT know its location. It has no means to do so.
The AirTag periodically broadcasts a Bluetooth signal. When your iPhone is within Bluetooth range (~30-40) of the tag, it will pick up that signal. Your model iPhone also features "precision finding," which in theory, should pinpoint the tag within inches of the phone.
When the tag is outside the Bluetooth range of your iPhone, it relies on the Apple "Find My" network, which consists of literally millions of other iPhones. When any one of those phones gets with Bluetooth range, it too will pick up the tag's signal, and relay the tag's ID, along with that phone's GPS location, to the Apple servers over an active Internet connection. In turn, that's where you would see the location updates with the Find My app on your phone.
