Activation Lock is requesting password

My old phone was stolen, I have lost the password for the associated account. Is there a way to wipe it and also to prevent the 'Activation Lock is requesting password' message being sent?

That's a scam message, designed to trick you into giving whoever has your phone the password. If you give them the information, they'll be able to wipe the phone and either sell it or use it themselves. Don't respond to any messages. They are NOT from Apple. They are from bad people.

As long as the phone is activation locked and you used a Passcode on it, no one can get into the phone.

You can put the phone in lost mode using the Find My App, but if you really don't know your Apple Account Password, that's going to be difficult to accomplish.
