I need to confirm a few transactions by verifying my card number. On the wallet app, when I do see more I am only able to view the last four of the "Apple Pay" card numbers.
is there a way to view the full number? I know that it can be done via an external NFC reader but i'd prefer to keep everything contained on the device if possible.

No, the NFC card reader does not receive the full number. Only the last 4 digits are on the payment token when the merchant’s credit card processor sends it to the PNO (Visa, MasterCard, American Express etc.). The PNO then determines the issuing bank and forwards data to the bank for approval or decline.
Chip readers and mag stripe readers have full account numbers, but Apple Wallet does not store or use that information.
Merchants do not need full account numbers to verify a transaction. The last 4 numbers are the unique descriptor and available on your iPhone and the merchant receipt.
