How do you remove a device from Icloud backup

I bought a new IPhone 16. I want to back it up to ICloud. the Phone's contents were restored to it from my old Iphone 12. I'm done with the Iphone 12. How do I remove the IPhone 12 from the ICloud backup? Apple in its usual sinister business practices has made it all but impossible to remove this phone and then backup the 16 without first upgrading my backup plan. I DON"T NEED THAT. I know that's good for Apple and ignores whatever me, and what the customer wants, but I'm not paying a single dime more to tech giants based on these scams that they get away with because, well, their billionaire overlords declare it to be so. And who am I to question that?

Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Select your device in All Device Backups > Delete and Remove from iCloud.

That is incorrect.

On your iPhone 12, as you prepared to move to your new iPhone 16, you should have gone through Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > [Transfer] Get Started … which would have displayed this screen.
