iPhone 4 and WiFi

I have home network with Airport Extreme. My iPhone 4 will freeze data transfer very frequently. It shows connected, but no data transfer. I have to turn WiFi off then turn it back on in order to have it continue data transfer - until the next freeze. I tried a restore on the iPhone, but the problem persists. Anyone else with WiFi problems?

No wi-fi connection problems with my wireless network via my Airport Extreme Time Capsule nor with any of the number of wi-fi networks I regularly connect my iPhone with.

Wi-Fi network settings are included with your iPhone's backup and if there is a problem in regards to this with your iPhone's backup and you restore your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup, you will also restore the problem and be right back where you started.

Try forgetting the network on your iPhone followed by re-joining the network and if no change after this, try re-setting network settings on your iPhone followed by re-joining your network.

I would like to understand this problem as well as it would relate to the routers. My symptoms are that I can be in Safari, or any other app that has to access something over WiFi, and lose responsiveness. Switching between apps or browsing the internet, I can go from the phone showing connected, but nothing happens till I get out of the app, go to settings, turn WiFi off, then back on, go back to the app and Viola! it responds.

There was a mention that it is my router. What would I need to do to the router to make that stop?

I have set a static ip address for DNS (OpenDNS)
I have set a static ip address for my phones MAC address on the router instead of allowing DHCP to assign it.

What else would be recommended for stopping this behavior? Any ideas?

My lap top computers don't have the same issue, so I am curious why the behavior is only on the iPhone4, and buying a new router could be an option, but I would like to hear a viable explaination before going that direction.

The mention of this being a problem with the person's Belkin router included this.

+Any problem when connected to any other wi-fi network?+

With 3rd party routers, there could be a firmware update available for the router model that hasn't been installed which can make a difference with a wireless network or connection problem.

This is different from an app losing the internet connection - an app no longer being responsive at all - being frozen.

I had this problem ever since I bought my iPhone 4 and it's been driving me nuts. I tried switching off the N protocol etc, but nothing worked.

I have a new AirPort Extreme with the guest network feature and after I finally got the idea to turn the guest network my problems went away instantly. Give it a try if you have the same setup + problems as me. Good luck.

i have updated the firmware on my router to no effect. some times it just hangs on the internet connection.

it will show its loading but it will stay at the fist 3 letters on the url bar.and will stay like this untill i turn wifi of and on then it will act like its working perfectly.

my router is in 100 percent working order. never have had a problem

its a belkin and i dont see what using a router thats not apple has ANYTHING to do with this and dont see how that is a thirdparty router.

all routers are thirdparty

Your eyes are wrong since there can be a difference.

Signal quality may be the same when at at the same distance away from wireless routers by different manufacturers, but there is more involved connecting with a wireless router and network than signal quality.

There isn't a restaurant that you visit on occasion with a free wireless network, or you don't have a friend or relative nearby that has a wireless network?

The reason I ask, if you don't have the same problem or any problem when connected to any other wi-fi network, the problem lies somewhere with your wireless network or settings.

I just got an iphone 4 a couple weeks ago and I love it....when it works. My wifi signal at home starts and stops all the time. The display on the top bar always shows a strong wifi signal, but when I try to use it, it just loads forever and eventually gives an error message about "unable to connect to server" or something like that.

But the second I switch to 3G, everything loads just fine. Unfortunately I have the $15 data plan, so my bill goes up if I keep using 3G when wifi won't work. I wish there was a fix for this crappy wifi problem. I have been trying all kinds of fixes from Apple on the phone and suggestions from the web all to no avail.

I recently bought an unlocked Canadian iPhone 4 from the Apple Store and have had problems connecting it to my Airport Express (802.11n). All other devices at home connect to the AE with no problems (My MacBook Pro, my wife's Macbook, our Wii, my old Palm Pre, etc). The iPhone connects but cannot get any information - any app that uses data almost always times out (I am not using 3g data right now - I am basically using the iPhone as an iPod touch until I move back to the US in 3 weeks). A couple of times, I used the built-in weather app while connected to the Airport and it updated one location and timed out on the rest. I noticed that the IP address assigned to the iPhone 4 is totally different from the IP addresses assigned to other devices on the Airport network (209.148.xxx.xxx compared to 172.31.xxx.xxx for my MacBook Pro). The Airport has the latest firmware (7.4.2) is in Bridge mode as my apartment building provides a wired network connection direct from the wall (no cable or DSL modem).

The iPhone works perfectly with my apartment's unsecured wi-fi network (I believe it is the same network the Airport is plugged into). In fact, as soon as I switch from my Airport to the unsecured wi-fi, the internet works great. When I switch back to the Airport, it quits again. Unfortunately, the unsecured wi-fi does not appear to work for apps that require the iPhone to be on the same network as my computer (for example, Apple Remote and Appigo ToDo), even when I place my computer on the same unsecured network with the iPhone (not that I want to use an unsecured network for any period of time anyway).

I have tried resetting the Airport Express to factory defaults, forgetting the network from the iPhone, resetting network settings on the iPhone, and hard resetting the iPhone. None of these has yielded any results. Would it be worth doing a fresh restore of the iPhone?
