Silent mode issue with iPhone and Apple Watch

When wearing my Iwatch with watch on silent mode but phone volume on I only get hepatic notifications on the watch, but if I then switch my phone to silent mode my watch begins ringing and having audio text alerts.

Disconnecting the watch and putting phone on silent seems to be the only way to be sure it won’t make any noise. Not right! I’ll be leaving mine at home until this is fixed I guess
