Why are lyrics missing for my purchased iTunes/Apple Music songs?

None of the music I've bought on iTunes/Music will show me the lyrics! Even for well-known songs or songs where I can see by checking on any other music platform that they do indeed have lyrics uploaded for them.

From a little research, it looks like if you pay for the Apple Music subscription, it unlocks the lyrics, but I recently switched from having a subscription for music (through YouTube Music), to buying the music to help support the artists more and to be able to own a copy of their music (and to save money). I didn't even think to check that the lyrics might be locked behind a paywall.

I am Deaf (extremely hard-of-hearing) and I need the lyrics to be able to understand the words of my favorite songs... It's not just a "ooh neat" feature for me, it's an ADA accessibility point. Any idea how I would fix this?

Hello zo_cro,

All of the music purchased through Apple Music will not have lyrics. You stated correctly that an Apple Music subscription is required for this feature.

Given your situation, I would suggest turning on Live Captions (unfortunately it's not extremely accurate and does not quickly display fast-moving text as it is listening for and displaying text at the same time, but I found it to work decently when playing Anti-Hero by Taylor Swift):

Get live captions of spoken audio on iPhone - Apple Support

  • On your iPhone go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Live Captions
  • Toggle on Live Captions

Also, you could turn on Music Haptics (available on iPhone) which provide a haptic "beat" which plays along to the music:

  • Under Accessibility in Settings go to Music Haptics
  • Toggle on Music Haptics

I wish there was a better way to display lyrics on purchased music, but this seems to be the best solution right now.

Let me know if you need any more help. Have a nice day!
