Critical software update error loop on my MacBook Pro

I turned on my laptop this evening to an error message stating that there was a critical software update required for my MacBook Pro. I had not requested any software updates. All attempts to update including in safe mode were unsuccessful. I am in an endless loop and keep getting this same screen

Try to reinstall macOS in Recovery Mode: How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support. This should automatically install the latest critical security features.

That error is caused by a hardware issue that affects the Touchbar. Until you resolve the hardware issue, you won't be able to boot macOS normally. Typically the hardware issue is usually with the Touchbar and/or Logic Board (liquid damage is a common cause, but not always), but a bad built-in Camera and/or Display Assembly has been known to cause the issue as well. This is from my own personal experience supporting my organization's laptops.


In the mean time you should be able to boot into Safe Mode to access your files and to make sure you have a good backup.


I don't recommend repairing any 2016-2020 Intel Macs with USB-C ports for multiple reasons. The money spent on repairs is better put towards a new laptop.
