If you want to run iOS 16, you will need an iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus or iPhone X.
No, it cannot.
If you decide to replace it with a newer iPhone, I would suggest purchasing one that is compatible with iOS 17 and 18. Already, we are starting to see some apps require iOS 17 or later.
