M1 Macbook Pro doesn't show CF Express card in Finder or Disk Utility

I'm trying to copy photos (Jpeg & Raw) directly from a CF Express card to a folder on the desktop of my 2021 M1 Macbook Pro. I've tried connecting using a card reader and also connecting the camera (Nikon Z8) directly to the laptop, neither the card nor the camera show in Finder or in Disk Utility.

The camera does show in the (absolutely useless) Photos app, but I do not want to use this as it doesn't permit you to import the files to a folder of your choice so you can edit them. The camera also shows in the Nikon Transfer app. I've seen this issue mentioned in previous posts, but they no longer permit new questions and there were no useful solutions. Any (useful) suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have a Z8 and I import RAW files from the CFExpress card directly to folders in Finder. I do the same with the jpgs on the SD card which I then import to Photos, in fact, directly to the album in Photos that I specify. For the pictures that will benefit, I work on the RAW files mostly in LIghtRoom Classic, but also in Nikon's NX Studio.

Z8 Lossless NEF is supported, but I use NEF High Efficiency* which are not directly supported on Macs, so the file icons won't include thumbnails.

Also QuickLook doesn't work directly on the files. However, I'm using an app called Raw Right Away to show NEF thumbnails and allow QuickLook on NEF files.

Since importing works for me on my M1 MacAir and on my M3pro MacBook, I wonder if your reader or cable may be at fault.
