Can I manually set the time zone on my iPhone?

Is there any way to get the iPhone to override network provided time zone settings with actual, physical location-based settings?

When I travel outside a small area (within which I reside) the time zone automatically changes appropriately. If I turn airplane mode ON while I'm home, it changes appropriately. As soon as I turn airplane mode OFF, while at home, it switches to Chicago. While Chicago isn't any further away than the correct time zone it picks while airplane mode is on (Indianapolis), the time there is an hour earlier than where I live. I've tried with and without VPN on (connected to a NYC server), I've tried turning off Wi-Fi and toggling the automatic time setting feature and have done the same with cellular data. I've even turned them BOTH off and toggled the setting... STILL picks Chicago. By deduction, it must be the local cell tower's voice service that is providing the incorrect time zone. I don't want to turn the "Set Automatically" feature off, because I do travel frequently and that travel frequently takes me across time zones. It shouldn't be an impossibility to have it change correctly while I'm home too.

Yes, you can do.

Setting the time zone on your device manually to a location different from where you are physically located can have several disadvantages:

  1. Incorrect Time: The most obvious disadvantage is that your device's clock will display the wrong time for your actual location. This can lead to confusion and difficulties in scheduling appointments, meetings, or other time-sensitive activities.
  2. Calendar and Scheduling Issues: Many calendar applications and scheduling tools rely on your device's time zone settings to ensure accurate scheduling. Manually setting your time zone to a different location may result in discrepancies, causing events to be scheduled at the wrong time.
  3. Communication Challenges: If you are communicating with people in different time zones, setting your device's time zone incorrectly can lead to misunderstandings and missed communications. Emails, messages, and other time-sensitive correspondence may be affected.
  4. Location-Based Services: Some apps and services use your device's time zone to provide location-specific information or services. Manually setting your time zone to a different location can impact the accuracy of these services.
  5. Travel Confusion: If you travel while your device's time zone is set to a different location, it can be challenging to adjust to the local time, leading to potential confusion and missed appointments.

In general, it is recommended to keep your device's time zone setting configured to the correct location based on your current physical position to avoid these potential issues.

Go to Settings > General > Date & Time. Turn on any of the following: Set Automatically: iPhone gets the correct time over the network and updates it for the time zone you're in. Some networks don't support network time, so in some countries or regions, iPhone may not be able to automatically determine the local time.
