iPhone memory full scam in instagram

I am helping an elderly relative. She is getting the scam message below when using Instagram. Not safari.

Some questions

  • how is it possible that Instagram can be “tricked” into showing this message? Is it just because she visited a particular account?
  • Most importantly how do I “fix” this for her.
  • how do I report this to apple? The “hypercleaner” app is one of those fake Chinese apps that has 5 star reviews that then tries to trick people into in-app purchases

Instagram has an option to report ads by tapping the 3 dots you see in your screenshot near the bottom of the page. There is no guarantee it will stop the ad you see. Instagram obviously prioritizes to those that are paying them and you are simply the product being sold to the advertisers. That is their business model. Any problem you have with an ad that Instagram provides can only be resolved through them.

Ads are the source of revenue and their support article details how they can be created and are very common. It is actually surprising that you have not come across them before.

The ads are not coming from Apple, they are coming from Instagram which is a product you choose to support. As with any third party developer, you would need to contact them if you have a problem with their service and if they refuse to respond, then quit using the app. Apple cannot prevent an app from running ads, it is up to the user if they want to use the app that runs the ads.

It is an ad that Instagram is paid to pop up on the iPhone. Instagram has not been tricked into showing that ad, they are doing it intentionally. The app is free to download, but Meta makes an incredible amount of revenue off those ads and is why you can use their service for free.

Apple cannot stop a developer from displaying an ad and it is the users choice on whether they want to use the app or not. You can complain to Meta/Instagram about the ads, but don't expect any action.

That would be up to Instagram. Meta's services are rather notorious for selling ad space to all sorts of, shall we say, less than responsible advertisers and companies. There's almost certainly nothing to be done other than have your relative stop using that app.

As to reporting the app, I don't know of any way to do that without having downloaded the app. Perhaps someone else here will know an effective route. You can use their Feedback system:

Product Feedback - Apple

but whether that will do any good I don't know.

Regards.

You can block popup ads in Safari, because Apple owns Safari --> Block pop-up ads and windows in Safari - Apple Support

But I am not aware you can block popup ads in Instagram. Again, Apple doesn't own them and has no control over what they send to you. Keep in mind that aps from companies like Meta (the parent company of Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook) track everything you do in their app. I would guess your mom at some point clicked on an ad, which Instagram logged and then knew your mom might have interest in such ads.

As users, we have to be the vigilant ones. We are tracked, monitored and fed things based on our viewing histories.

In addition to everything KiltedTim provided, which is 100% correct, reporting this to Apple would be a waste of time. Apple doesn't own Instagram. Apple has no control who they get revenue from, like the example you showed. If you want to complain to someone, complain to Instagram, but they won't honestly care. As KiltedTim correctly suggests, you aren't their customer. They don't get any revenue from you. They don't charge you to use their app. They make their money by companies paying them to do the very thing you are concerned about.

As far as reporting to Apple , I meant the app itself. They do shutdown these apps, then they reappear under another name. I think hyper cleaner used to be called smart cleaner.
