Unable to clear Safari history as delete button is greyed out

My delete button for history on safari is grayed out and my device is up to date, content restrictions don’t restrict me from doing it, and my device isn’t on a school or work thing

If the "Clear History and Website Data" option in iPhone's Safari settings is greyed out, it typically means one of the following:

  1. No Browsing Data Left to Clear – If Safari has already been cleared, or if there is no stored history, cache, or cookies, the option may become unavailable.
  2. Content & Privacy Restrictions Are Enabled – If Screen Time settings (formerly Restrictions) are enabled on the iPhone, they can prevent changes to browsing history. This is common on devices with parental controls activated. You can check this by going to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content, and ensuring it is not set to "Limit Adult Websites" or "Allowed Websites Only."
  3. Safari is Managed by an Organization or Profile – If the iPhone is linked to a work, school, or parental management profile, certain settings—including Safari history clearing—may be restricted. You can check this under Settings > General > VPN & Device Management to see if a profile is installed.
  4. iCloud Syncing Is Preventing Deletion – If Safari is syncing with iCloud across multiple devices, the history might be managed elsewhere. Try disabling Safari sync under Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Safari, then check if the option becomes available.

If none of these apply and the issue persists, restarting the iPhone or updating iOS may help
