iCloud is an integral part of iOS, designed to seamlessly store and sync your data across all your Apple devices. By default, Apple provides 5GB of free iCloud storage, which is used for backups, document storage, and syncing various app data. However, if you require more storage, you can upgrade to iCloud+, which offers additional storage plans along with enhanced privacy features such as Private Relay, Hide My Email, and custom email domains.
While you cannot completely disable iCloud, you do have control over what data gets synced. For example, you can choose to disable iCloud Photos, iCloud Messages, iCloud Notes, iCloud Drive, and other specific iCloud services, preventing them from using storage and syncing across devices. If you prefer, you can manage these settings individually by navigating to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud and toggling off any services you do not wish to use.
Additionally, if you do not want your device to back up to iCloud, you can turn off iCloud Backup and instead back up your iPhone manually to a computer using Finder (on macOS) or iTunes (on Windows). However, keep in mind that certain Apple services, like Find My iPhone, rely on iCloud to function properly and cannot be turned off without signing out of iCloud entirely, which also disables essential features like Apple Pay and Activation Lock.
