MacBook Pro (2016) not starting. Only Esc button lighting up

Sometimes a turn on chime but not every time. Apple Store said it was screen and to connect to an external monitor. I did this and a few times I’ve seen a black screen on the external monitor with ‘recovery’ top left but it only gives me the option to shut down, restart or wipe hard drive.

I’m trying to retrieve files on my MacBook.

Any ideas how to reboot so I can access these files? Thank you for any help!
