MacBook Pro (2016) not starting. Only Esc button lighting up

Hello. My MacBook Pro will not start up. When I press power button only Esc button lights up. Sometimes a turn on chime but not every time. Apple Store said it was screen and to connect to an external monitor. I did this and a few times I’ve seen a black screen on the external monitor with ‘recovery’ top left but it only gives me the option to shut down, restart or wipe hard drive. I’m trying to retrieve files on my MacBook. The battery last time I saw was 100%. It’s connected to power source. If tried unplugging and plugging into all ports. Any ideas how to reboot so I can access these files? Thank you for any help!

It would seem a hardware issue...

You can try—

If you value your user data

3-2-1 Backup Strategy: three copies of your data, two different methods, and one offsite.
