Third party File Explorer view clone for Mac Finder?

Do any third party programs actually provide a ‘File Explorer type clone view’ for Finder, so showing two panes, with all and only fully expandable folders in the left pane, and the opened folders and all files in the right pane? If not, plausibly, why not?

Please note: This post is not intended to be about whether Finder or File Explorer is overall preferable, nor about what other functionality expansions are available third party for Finder.

Mac mini, macOS 15.2

To save you some time, I checked those "ten-best" lists. The apps that I recognize are Path Finder and Commander One. Both advertise a "dual pane" user experience. I've never used either of them. But they are both apps that have been around for a long time, so I recognize them.

I'm a bit skeptical of Commander One because it is Mac App Store app. Obviously there's nothing wrong with that. It's a smart move from a business perspective. But it seems like a Finder replacement would be hamstrung by Mac App Store technical restrictions. To be fair, that's totally a guess on my part.

Because it is virtually impossible to make a living writing Mac-only software. So your chances of finding a high-quality, well-supported Finder clone is very low. And the future of the few such apps you will find is short. I checked out the developer of Path Finder and found pretty much what I expected - someone very similar to myself. Us old guys are getting more interested in retirement than writing great Mac apps. Those of us who still need to make some money before retirement probably realize that Mac apps aren't going to do that for us.

I did a similar check for Commander One and found the other most likely developer for such an app. While there is certainly nothing wrong with this, I do find it strange that such a significant portion of all Mac software is written by a small group of globe-trotting Ukrainian guys.

It's really not about people trying to argue with you about the Finder. They sincerely want you to have a good experience. Attempting to reproduce the behaviour of some foreign operating system is always going to lead to a poor user experience, regardless of platform. If you want to give your money to some indie developer, go for it. They certainly deserve it. I know I would never attempt such an app. As far as apps go, it would be relatively easy. But it's just a horrible marketing decision. And I'm an expert at horrible marketing decisions.

You also need to take time to get use to the Finder. I am also one of those people who really liked Windows Explorer back in the day and found the Finder disappointing when I first had to use a Mac back in the old OS7.6 days. I definitely prefer the old Windows File Explorer (not a fan of the Win10 version) and the various file explorers available with Linux. However, I have gotten used to Finder's limitations and just try to work around them since I have no choice. You just have to experiment a bit and give yourself a bit of time to adjust. I can say you will never truly enjoy the Finder, but maybe you can learn to live with it. Depends on how much you want a Mac and Apple's ecosystem.

Or maybe you need to revive one of those old Finder replacement projects....that is after all why those projects started originally.....someone who had enough need & desire to do something about it, but heed @etresoft's insights in that regard.

I agree with your perspective. Finder can be made to work well in most respects by nearly everybody, after a lot of long term effort, but likely no joy there (and Apple is supposed to be about joy, isn't it?).

An intelligent Apple leadership would spend some time and effort in this direction, but whatever.

Right now I am looking at streamlining and reducing the quantity and complexity (in terms of number of levels...) of saved folders and files in Windows, which needed doing anyway.

After that, I may or may not give my Mac a trial period as my main computer, instead of being just a browser and an email device in another room of my house.

Understand you're a bit bugged by this, but even if it were on Apple's slop chit it would be a long way down. It's things like AI, TV, streaming, browsing, photography, videography which will get and retain customers. A 15-year old user telling Apple that Samsung's AI is better than Apples will have 1E12 times the impact of you telling them that Finder's no good. I bet that about 30% of Mac users barely ever use Finder. Their photos and videos are in their Photos and Apple TV apps. and everything else happens in the internet app (Safari). They don't go firkling around 7-deep Finder structures - any files they have are all in Documents unless an app puts them somewhere else. I set up my cousin's new Mac over Christmas. She's had Macs since about 2010. When I do phone support she still doesn't know what finder is until I tell her it's the blue smiley face thing. She never uses it unless I'm on the phone telling her to.

There are loads of apps out there that do Finder-like tasks differently from Finder. Check them out - some are free - but Finder's not going to change.

I don't much like Finder but it's annoyances are more than compensated for by the rest of the Mac for me. If you find a MS PC perfect for your needs then that's fine - buy a new PC but if you think that making Finder look more like File Explorer (or whatever it's called these days) would have any measurable impact on Apple's sales then you don't understand their customer base.
