Does MacBook Pro keep working even when the lid is closed?

Typically your MacBook will go to sleep when the screen is closed and all but functions that are work in Power Nap will be suspended:

Turn Power Nap on or off on Mac - Apple Support

There have been third-party utilities that could keep your Mac awake when the screen is closed, but I'm not sure if any are still current.
