why does my new ultra 2 pause after 10-20 sec into every workout? I have autopause off. I see this reported a lot. Watch is firm on wrist, tried both wrists, up further, down further.

Any chance you have tattoos on your wrist? If the sensor is not able to detect your wrist, the workout will be paused.
Did you try to force restart by pressing and holding the Digital Crown and the Side button together for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again?
If this does not work, unpairing the watch would be the next step:
Fitness Tracking is enabled in the settings for Privacy in the Watch App on Our iPhone?
If a new Apple Watch has the same issue, did you try to unpair it again, but this time set it up as a new device, without using the latest backup?
ok, workouts work with wrist detection off.
Can't use passcode or turn on with iphone with wrist detection off. Also can't monitor HR (use for chronic afib), call emergency services for fall. I had bad fall yesterday and no detection of it, because watch paused.
Is this software or sensor hardware issue? Not fixed after months of reporting problem? Since turning off wrist detection for workout disables a number of functions, I would expect a fix by now if it was software

no, no reset, restart, or re-pairing effective. I even got a new watch as a repair thing. Same problems.
