Sun flares in outdoor photography on iPhone

When I shoot photos with the sun out of the field of view but illuminating the lenses, I get bad flares. Other than using my hand to block the sun, which is cumbersome, does anyone know how to shield the sun while taking outdoor photos, such as when hiking?

I use a cool gadget to block out sun flares, etc. It's called Sun Shield, made by SunPro. It's very slim and attaches to your MagSafe iPhone case. It's very effective at blocking out sun rays and flares. There's a frame that sits around, not on, the lenses and a very thin circular shade that pops up. You rotate the shade 360 degrees to wherever it's needed. And the shade stays in place so both hands are now free. Excellent! and very effective at blocking flares.

You can also use it as an iPhone stand. Works with iPhones 12 13, 14, 15, 16.

I got it on Amazon.

Actually there are plenty of third party lens hoods that you could buy. The nicest ones are the rubber ones that collapse. Do a Google search for iPhone lens hood.

This is no different than photography with a regular camera. I've been heavily into photography for decades. Any time I'm getting lens flare, I throw on a lens hood, and it fixes the problem.

I recommend the item like the one bikes4ever linked to. In the industry it was known as a French Flag. It will work effectively on any of the 3 lenses.

Hoods, while less work, are really only effective at one focal length. If you have a lens hood that’s effective for your 1X or 3X or 5X it won’t work for the .5X. The ultra wide lens will be taking photos of the inside of the hood.

That's why I suggested the collapsible hoods. If you are shooting wide, you simply partway collapse it. I've had good luck with mine. However if you are talking about the solid ones, yes, you are correct.
