A continuously flashing status light indicates a failure to start up properly. First try a cold restart (disconnect from power for a minute or two). If that doesn’t solve it, then the system software may need to be re-installed. For the Apple TV HD (4th generation) or earlier models, users can do this themselves through a computer. For the 4K models (without USB port), users will need assistance from Apple for this.
Restore your Apple TV - Apple Support
If you have an Apple TV HD or earlier
If you see a warning symbol while trying to update the software, or see a black screen on your TV and a flashing indicator light on your Apple TV, you can restore your Apple TV.
Follow the steps as indicated in the linked support article.
- Use a USB cable to connect the Apple TV box to a computer. Verify that this is a fully wired generic USB cable that supports data transfer (not just for charging, nor bespoke for a certain device).
- An HDMI cable is not suitable for restoring.
- Power the Apple TV box with a power cable at the indicated moment (step 4).
- Older computers may need to use the iTunes application.
- Newer Macs (macOS 10.15 or later) should get to the Restore interface through the sidebar of a Finder window. The connected Apple TV box would be listed under Locations.
