MacBook Air M1 Restarting When Closing Lid + Unable to Start in Safe Mode

Hi all,

I’m experiencing an issue with my MacBook Air M1, where sometimes, when I close the lid (without shutting it down), the system restarts on its own. When I open it back up, instead of resuming where I left off, all my apps, files, Chrome tabs, etc., start reopening as if I’ve just logged in again.

I've also attempted to follow the steps to start my Mac in Safe Mode to troubleshoot, but I’m not able to get into Safe Mode. I’ve followed the process below, but no Safe Mode option shows up after performing the steps:

Steps I’ve been following to start in Safe Mode:

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > Shut Down.
  2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. (The screen is black, and all lights are off.)
  3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.
  4. Select a volume.
  5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
  6. The computer restarts automatically, but when the login window appears, I don’t see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

Has anyone else encountered a similar issue? Is there something I might be missing or another way to get into Safe Mode? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Is it possible that the background color displayed on the login page is masking the red text of Safe Boot?

As for the issue of your Mac shutting down when the lid is closed, see if the computer is set to Log out automatically after inactivity. Find that at System Settings > Privacy & Security > Advanced. (You'll probably have to scroll to the bottom of the page.)
