How do I display my MacBook Air screen on to a monitor?

I have a MacBook Air and I have used a large external screen before to drag the laptop data to the LG screen. But its not cooperating. Maybe the cords are not in proper place. the screen is plugged into an external outlet. the laptop is connect to the screen with a dongle/usb connection.
